Stuart schaffer

Director

For 31 years, Stuart worked as a lawyer for a large, multinational law firm.  Stuart and his wife Julie retired and became full-time residents of Sugarloaf Key in 2013.  Stuart has been a board member and Public Policy Committee chair of the Sugarloaf Shores Property Owners Association (SSPOA) for many years, including a three-year stint as SSPOA’s president.

Stuart has been an activist in the Keys for nearly a decade, with a focus on overdevelopment, nearshore water quality, and solutions to the Keys’ affordable workforce housing crisis.  His achievements include helping to defeat efforts by developers to drastically increase affordable housing density countywide under Goals 109 and 111; leading the challenge to a proposed 88-unit apartment development on South Point, which resulted in a settlement agreement to reduce the scale of the project to 56 units; and leading the successful request for a $10 million grant from the state for construction of the 4-mile Sugarloaf Key portion of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail along US 1.  Most recently, Stuart has been the co-head of the Florida Keys ROGO Coalition and its efforts to minimize the number of new ROGO allocations for the Keys.

Stuart is proud to be a new member of the Last Stand board after many years of working alongside Last Stand in fighting to preserve the unique beauty of our beloved Florida Keys.
