Fred covan

vice president elect

Fred was born and raised in the Greenwich Village community in Manhattan, New York City. He is a clinical psychologist and worked at Harlem Hospital and was the Chief Psychologist at Bellevue Hospital before moving to Key West. He jokingly says he’s the only male who moved to Key West against his will,  as most couples come because the guy wants to play out of the Hemmingway fantasy. His coming to Key West was unusual in that he met a local Key West lawyer, Diane Tolbert, while she was on vacation in New York City. They were married in 1984 with an agreement to move to Key West in 10 years. He thought she’d forgotten. She didn’t. On January 16, 1994. She stated that she was moving to Key West with the children and invited him to come. They left in June 1994. He has been here ever since and is grateful to Diane.

Fred is working in Key West as a clinical psychologist, doing therapy and criminal forensic evaluations.  He became involved with Last Stand because he had seen the personality of his community of Greenwich Village destroyed by commercialism and overdevelopment. He’s concerned that the same is happening to Key West. He is also an avid fisherman and has seen the deterioration of the nearshore waters. He believes there has to be a balance between tourism,  development, and the local traditional lifestyle.
